Exploring Denmark’s Coastline with Bul

With a genuine focus on fine and delicate detail, Búl designer Virginia Martin sources inspiration from different coastal landscapes to form the basis of her collection each season. For Spring Summer 2015, it’s the minimalist style and breathtaking scenery of Denmark.

Martin’s personal travels to the Nordic country serve as inspiration, paying homage to the minimalist approach to functionality and architecture that is synonymous with true Danish style.

In line with the label’s classic and understated look, the new collection makes use of innovative fabrics and clean shapes. The multi purpose designs encourage layering, making it easy to achieve a look of effortless Scandinavian cool. We caught up with the Melbourne designer to chat about her new collection:

Myer: Who is the búl woman?
Virginia Martin: The búl woman is somebody who seeks designs that are contemporary yet classic – a woman who appreciates quality and fine touches.

M: What drew you to Denmark for the SS15 collection?
VM: Denmark’s coastline is the key theme for inspiration; my own travels and the country’s rich minimalist heritage – looking at architecture, furniture and interior design – as well as the landscapes of this northern wonderland.

M: Describe the new collection in one sentence:
VM: Denmark is where crisp, minimal shapes meet feminine functionality, utilising innovative, printing and quilting techniques.

M: What’s the first summer holiday you can remember?
VM: At our holiday house in Dromana – my brother knocked my front tooth out playing backyard cricket. That’s all I remember about it!

M: Describe your perfect summer’s day:
VM: Wake up, surf, walk, eat, drink, surf, walk, surf, sleep!
